New tariffs on certain Canadian imports—which were announced by President Trump July 20—took effect at midnight Aug. 22 after being delayed three days from the original effective date of Aug. 19. The 50% tariffs apply to a broad range of products, including alcoholic beverages, dairy products, clothing, sporting goods, cement and some building materials.
The tariffs took effect after trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada failed to resolve ongoing trade issues, including U.S. concerns over Canada’s treatment of U.S. automobiles, alcohol and dairy products. Issued under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, the tariffs apply to all covered goods regardless of whether the product originates under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement but do not apply to certain products subject to tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
